Peace! Friendship! Bubblegum!

This Russian saying emerged during the second half of the 20th century from the youth’s desperate desire for overseas joys like music, fashion, and…bubblegum. As the USSR began to open its gates to foreign visitors, citizens would try to buy things practically off of their backs.

With soviet alternatives so inferior to foreign bubblegum, references to gum became a tongue in cheek mockery of the soviet powers that be.

Then: Peace! Friendship! Bubblegum! A mimicry of soviet banners–which followed a 3 word format intoning propaganda–carried all the irony that only foreign bubblegum was worth chewing, and the piece and friendship of the USSR was just as empty of nutritional value.

Eventually, this phrase became a sardonic white flag of peace; in argument or debate.

It’s hard to pin down the exact root of the saying, or even a universal meaning as it has shifted through the decades, but as a second generation immigrant, born to parents raised in 1980s USSR, we would always jokingly say "meer, drujba, jevachka" to let the other person know "it’s all good, everything’s going to be okay".
